Battery & Charging Faults

Modern vehicles don't just charge a battery — they manage it. We diagnose battery, alternator, smart charging and BMS faults properly, including battery registration where the vehicle requires it.

Symptoms of a Charging Fault

Charging-system faults can show up in several different ways. The most common signs include:

  • Flat battery — especially after the car has stood for a short time
  • Battery or alternator warning light on the dash
  • Slow cranking or no-start, particularly when cold
  • Stop-start system no longer functioning
  • Dim or flickering lights, or erratic instrument cluster behaviour
  • Multiple warning lights appearing at once when the system voltage drops
  • New battery fitted but the charging warning is still showing

How We Diagnose It

A flat battery isn't always a failed battery. We test the whole charging system properly:

  • Battery health test — state of charge, cold-crank performance and internal resistance
  • Alternator output test — voltage and current under load, with proper evaluation of smart charging behaviour
  • Parasitic drain test to find what's pulling current when the car should be asleep
  • Module scan for BMS, energy management and charging-system fault codes (BMW, Mercedes, JLR and VAG all use smart charging that needs proper diagnosis)
  • Wiring and earth inspection on the charging circuit — a poor earth can mimic a failed alternator

What the Service Involves

Battery testing & replacement

Proper load testing of the battery before condemning it. If replacement is needed, the correct spec is fitted.

Battery registration & coding

Many modern vehicles (BMW, Mini, Mercedes, VAG and others) require the new battery to be registered to the energy management system so charging is adapted correctly. We carry this out with dealer-level tooling.

Alternator & charging system

Diagnosis and replacement of alternator and smart charging faults — including correct evaluation of the control module that regulates charging.

Parasitic drain tracing

Methodical isolation of whatever is staying awake and draining the battery, so the fault is fixed rather than the symptom managed.

Before You Book

A few things that help us move faster:

  • Has the battery been replaced recently, and was it registered to the vehicle?
  • How long does the car stand before the battery goes flat?
  • Are there any warning lights on the dash, and do they come and go?
  • Is the stop-start system still working?
