Car Warning Lights Explained
A warning light is the vehicle telling you something isn't right. The code behind it rarely tells the whole story — but knowing what each light means helps you decide how urgent it is. Here's a plain-English guide.
Red — Stop
A red warning means stop when safe and get it investigated before driving further — battery/charging, oil pressure, or airbag/SRS can cause damage or a safety risk.
Amber — Get It Checked
An amber warning means a fault is stored but the vehicle is usually still drivable. Get it diagnosed soon — a flashing amber engine light is the exception and shouldn't be driven.
Engine Management / Check Engine (MIL)
WHAT IT MEANSThe engine management light means the engine ECU has stored a fault code — emissions, sensor, misfire, fuel system or running fault. Amber means get it checked; flashing means a misfire serious enough to damage the catalytic converter — don't drive it.
WHAT WE DOA full diagnostic scan reads the stored code and live data so we can see what's actually happening, not just that a code exists.
ABS / Traction Control
WHAT IT MEANSAn ABS or traction-control warning means the anti-lock braking system has a fault — wheel speed sensor, ABS module, pump or wiring. The car is still brakeable, but ABS and stability control are disabled.
WHAT WE DOWe scan the ABS module, check wheel-speed data and test sensors and wiring before condemning the module.
Airbag / SRS
WHAT IT MEANSA red airbag or SRS warning means the airbag system has a fault and may not deploy in a crash, or could deploy unexpectedly. It must be investigated.
WHAT WE DOWe read the SRS module, check the crash sensors, clock spring and wiring under the seats (a very common cause) and clear the fault once it's genuinely fixed.
Battery / Charging
WHAT IT MEANSA red battery light while driving means the charging system isn't working — the car is running off the battery and will stop. Could be the alternator, smart-charge system, battery or wiring.
WHAT WE DOWe test the battery, alternator output under load and the smart-charging/BMS system before any parts are changed.
DPF / Emissions
WHAT IT MEANSA DPF or emissions warning means the diesel particulate filter or emissions system isn't regenerating or functioning correctly. Left alone it leads to restricted performance and, eventually, no-start.
WHAT WE DOWe diagnose whether it's a DPF, sensor, EGR or ECU issue — and whether a clean, a regeneration or a component repair is needed.
Gearbox / Transmission
WHAT IT MEANSA gearbox or transmission warning, often with limp mode, can be mechanical — but on modern cars it's frequently electrical: a mechatronic, sensor, solenoid or ECU fault.
WHAT WE DOWe read the gearbox ECU, check mechatronic and solenoid data and test at component level before recommending any repair.
Stop-Start Not Available
WHAT IT MEANSA 'stop-start not available' message is usually a battery, BMS or energy-management issue — the system has decided conditions aren't met. It's often a battery that hasn't been registered after replacement.
WHAT WE DOWe test the battery, read the BMS module and carry out battery registration where the vehicle requires it.
Multiple Warning Lights at Once
WHAT IT MEANSSeveral warnings appearing together usually points to a single underlying cause — a failing module, a power or earth fault, or a communication (CAN bus) issue — rather than each system failing individually.
WHAT WE DOThis is exactly the kind of fault generic scanners miss. A full scan across every module, plus wiring and earth checks, finds the common cause.
