Symptoms Guide

Common Auto Electrical Symptoms

Several faults showing up at once, a warning light that won't clear, or an intermittent issue that comes and goes — these are the symptoms we see most often. Here's what they usually point at.

Warning lights on the dash

Engine management, ABS, airbag, traction control or any other warning that won't clear, or comes and goes. See our dedicated warning lights page for what each one means and what to do.

Battery & charging faults

Flat battery, slow cranking, no-start, alternator warning light, stop-start no longer working, or a new battery fitted but the charging warning still showing.

Key, immobiliser & starting faults

Vehicle won't recognise the key, won't start, locks/unlocks erratically, or you've lost all keys and need a full set coded back to the car.

Limp mode & restricted performance

The vehicle has dropped into limp mode, shows a restricted-performance message, or the gearbox won't change gear properly. Often points to an electrical or sensor fault rather than a mechanical one.

Lights, wipers, windows & locks

Several functions playing up at once — lights, wipers, windows or central locking behaving erratically. Usually points to a body control module or a wiring/earth fault rather than each part failing individually.

Central locking & alarm faults

Locks not responding, alarm going off for no reason, dead-locking not engaging, or comfort functions like auto-locking behaving oddly.

Intermittent & weather-related faults

Faults that appear when it's damp or cold, or come and go with temperature. Water ingress, corrosion and poor earth points are common culprits that a generic scan won't find.

Don't Ignore the Symptoms

Electrical faults rarely fix themselves. A warning light that comes and goes is still a fault — and left alone it usually gets worse, takes out other systems, or leaves you stranded. The earlier it's diagnosed, the cheaper it tends to be.

A full diagnostic is £100 + VAT and gives you a clear, written report of what's actually wrong — so you can decide what to do next without guessing.
