Central Locking Faults

Central locking faults are common and usually relate to the body control module, door modules, keyless system or wiring in the door hinges. A single door not locking, the deadlocks not engaging, or the whole system failing can all point to different causes — and it isn't always the lock actuator.

Common Symptoms

Typical signs of this fault include:

One or more doors not locking or unlocking
Central locking works intermittently
Deadlocks not engaging
Locking from the key fob doesn't work
Door shows open on the dash when closed
Alarm not arming because a door shows open
Locking cycles on its own

What Could Cause It?

This fault can have several underlying causes — not all of them mean a module has failed:

  • Door lock actuator fault
  • Door module or body control module fault
  • Wiring in the door hinge (broken from flexing)
  • Door-ajar / latch sensor fault
  • Keyless module or antenna fault
  • Key fob fault
  • Wiring or connector faults

About the Central Locking System

Central locking is controlled by the body control module (or door modules on some vehicles), which drives the lock actuators and reads the door-ajar sensors. The system works with the keyless module and the alarm. A fault in the actuator, module, sensor, keyless system or — very commonly — the wiring in the door hinge can cause locking faults.

Is the Control Unit Definitely Faulty?

Body control or door-module faults are possible, but door-hinge wiring and lock actuators are more common. We test the actuator, the module outputs and the door wiring before replacing a module.

How Is It Diagnosed?

At OBD_PAL, we diagnose the complete system before recommending any replacement. Diagnosis typically includes:

Don't guess — diagnose it properly.

  • Diagnostic scan of the body/locking system
  • Lock actuator testing
  • Door-ajar / latch sensor testing
  • Wiring inspection, especially in the door hinge
  • Body control / door-module output testing
  • Keyless module and key-fob checks

Wiring & Electrical Diagnosis

Wiring in the door hinge flexes every time the door opens and closes and is a very common cause of central-locking and window faults. Broken wires in the hinge produce intermittent or complete failures.

Coding, Programming & Configuration

If a body control or door module is replaced, coding is usually required so the new module recognises the vehicle's locks and keys.

Don't Replace Modules Based on Guesswork

A fault code is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Many expensive control units are replaced unnecessarily when the real cause is a sensor, a wire, a power supply or a software issue. At OBD_PAL we diagnose the complete system first — don't guess, diagnose it properly — and only replace a module once it's genuinely confirmed faulty.

Next Step

Central Locking Faults?.

Don't replace expensive parts based on a fault code. OBD_PAL can diagnose the complete system and find the actual cause — then carry out the correct repair, programming or calibration.
